Gov. Ducey Talks School Safety With President Trump

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey met with President Trump on Sunday while he was in Washington, D.C., attending the National Governors Association winter meeting and a state dinner at the White House.

Responding to Trump’s inquiry on how to achieve better school safety, Ducey said he wants teachers to focus on instruction and doesn’t favor teachers being involved in law enforcement.

“I want to see our teachers teaching, and I think law enforcement can do law enforcement’s job, and that function is separate from teaching so teachers can focus on teaching and have that relationship with the kids as well," Ducey said.

However, Ducey stopped short of completely ruling out supporting some teachers being armed.

“If there is a teacher with a special exception, they’re a veteran, or former law enforcement, or they’re trained and there’s that opportunity, I would be open-minded to that," he said.

He added that he’d like to see the background check process improved for prospective gun owners.
