UA Basketball Coach Sean Miller Denies Paying To Recruit Deandre Ayton

University of Arizona basketball coach Sean Miller addressed the media Thursday, denying reports he discussed a $100,000 payment to secure a recruit.

Miller says he cannot stay silent amid scandalous reports that have surrounded U of A’s basketball program. The coach says he never knowingly violated NCAA rules while serving as the team’s head coach.

ESPN reported Friday that FBI wiretaps intercepted Miller’s phone calls about star freshman Deandre Ayton. The coach condemned the report, calling it completely false.

"I have never paid a recruit or prospect, or their family or representative, to come to Arizona. I never have, and I never will. I have never arranged or directed payment or any improper benefits to a recruit or prospect, or their family or representative, and I never will," he said.

Miller says he will now be turning his focus to his team.

The Arizona Board of Regents scheduled a special meeting Thursday to get legal advice and discuss the U of A men's basketball program and Miller's contract.
