Council On American-Islamic Relations Suing ASU, State Of Arizona

The Council on American-Islamic Relations is suing ASU, the Arizona Board of Regents, and the state of Arizona.

That’s because it claims that when the Muslim Students Association wanted to bring a speaker on campus, he was required to sign a contract that certified he was not engaged in a boycott of Israel.

ASU claims that this isn’t a part of the current speaker contract. But the entire issue centers around a state law that prohibits the state from doing business with individuals who are boycotting Israel.

This kind of boycott is a part of the larger Boycott Divestment Sanctions, or BDS movement, which protests Israel’s treatment of Palestinians and handling of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

For one perspective on all of this I spoke with Eugene Volokh. He’s a professor of law at UCLA.
