Phoenix city leaders and Milwaukee Brewers officials came together Tuesday to celebrate the renovation of the team’s spring training park, which is scheduled to begin this month.
The city and the team will pay for renovations to the ballpark, including a new scoreboard and new parking lots.
The Brewers will pay up to $60 million for construction while Phoenix will chip in $10 million over five years.
City council approved the deal last November.
“This is a special day not just for our city but for our neighborhood," said City Councilman Daniel Valenzuela. "This blue collar ballpark that belongs in this blue collar neighborhood.”
The renovations also include a new entryway, new clubhouse and new practice fields.
Valenzuela thanked the team’s chief financial officer for the agreement that will keep the Brewers in Maryvale until 2024.
“The Brewers had several opportunities here within the state and certainly outside of the state to move the organization," Valenzuela said. "And [CFO] Bob Quinn always came to the table trying to figure out a way to continue to invest in this community.”
The renovations are expected to be mostly done before next year’s spring training season.
