Congress has passed a bill that would give tribes funding to install AMBER Alert systems. The Ashlynne Mike AMBER Alert in Indian Country Act was named for an 11-year-old girl who was abducted on the Navajo Nation 10 hours before an AMBER Alert was issued.
“We cannot allow reservations to become safe havens for human traffickers and others intent on harming children,” said Sen. John McCain, who sponsored the legislation.
More than 8,000 kids are listed as missing in Indian Country today, according to the FBI.
If signed into law by President Donald Trump, the measure makes Justice Department grants and training available to tribes for child abduction warning systems.
