The Arizona Board of Regents has been targeted for criticism — and lawsuits — by the Arizona Attorney General’s office for raising tuition and not allowing attending the state’s three public universities to be “as nearly free as possible.”
Now the board may be facing dramatic structural changes thanks to House Bill 2203, sponsored by Republican Rep. Mark Finchem. His proposal would expand gubernatorial and legislative control of ASU, UA and NAU.
Board of Regents President Eileen Klein has argued that the regents are performing their duties properly and that the changes Finchem wants would dramatically affect students and employees—and not for the better.
