Scientists Trying To Understand Viruses Before They Become Pandemics

This flu season has been a particularly bad one, and that follows other viruses causing lots of harm, including Ebola and Zika.

But researchers are trying to lower the risk of pandemics by identifying and preparing for viruses that could be transmitted to humans.

Jonna Mazet is one of those researchers. She’s a professor of epidemiology and disease ecology in the Veterinary School at UC Davis and director of the One Health Institute there. She’s also worked on the Global Virome Project paper.

Mark Brodie is a co-host of The Show, KJZZ’s locally produced news magazine. Since starting at KJZZ in 2002, Brodie has been a host, reporter and producer, including several years covering the Arizona Legislature, based at the Capitol.
