You Can Now Text 911 In Maricopa County

Calling 911 should always be as easy and fast — but it’s not always possible for everyone to pick up a phone and talk to an emergency operator.

The deaf and the hard of hearing don’t always have that option. And what about domestic violence situations? Or some kind of standoff where you can’t give away your position?

Those were some of the situations administrators had in mind when they put together the new text to 911 system in Maricopa County.

The Maricopa Association of Governments, Maricopa Region 911, the Arizona Center for Disability Law and the National Association of the Deaf are announcing this morning the roll out of this new program this morning.

Liz Graeber, Maricopa Region 911 administrator, talked about what happens if you text 911.
