Bats are dying across North America from a fungal infection called White Nose Syndrome. The fungus makes hibernating bats burn up the fat stores they use to get through winter, among other symptoms, and can lead to their death within a few months.
Dr. Jeremy Coleman, the National White Nose Syndrome coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working to stop the fungus from spreading further.
EDITOR'S NOTE: A previous version of this story's headline incorrectly stated that White Nose Syndrome was killing bats in Arizona. White Nose Syndrome has not spread to Arizona, and the headline has been modified to correct the error.
