Detained Then Violated: Sexual Harassment In ICE Custody

Sexual harassment and assault complaints are a significant problem in detention centers. More than 1,200 complaints were filed in that category between 2010 and September 2017, primarily in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody.

But the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General (OIG) indicated that the office received closer to 33,000 complaints between 2010 and 2016, alleging a wide range of abuses in immigration detention.

According to a report by The Intercept, OIG records show investigations for just 2 percent of the complaints it shared with the publication.

Journalist Alice Speri wrote the piece for The Intercept and joined us to talk about it.
