A group of volunteer attorneys gathered at the Center For Neighborhood Leadership Saturday morning. They were helping people who had been illegally detained and racially profiled by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office a few years ago.
Brenda Muñoz Furnish is a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union. She said they were there to assist people who were filing applications for the MCSO compensation fund. That fund came out of the Ortega Melendres contempt hearings.
“We were on hand to help people fill out applications and to provide a little bit of information on the program for people who maybe didn’t know too much about it," Furnish said. "If somebody qualified, we were there to assist them with filling out the actual application and providing information on what type of documentation they should submit with their completed app.”
She said people who think they qualify for compensation should contact the ACLU and not be afraid to come forward with their information.
