Business leaders from Arizona and the neighboring Mexican state of Sonora are recommending more cross-border collaborations — especially in legal issues — as a way to foster bilateral economic growth.
About 45 businesspeople and government officials, including lawyers, accountants and business owners, made the recommendation as part of the Arizona-Mexico Town Hall event in Hermosillo on Friday, said Patrick Welch, a Phoenix attorney who helped organize the event.
One of a handful of recommendations made after roundtable meetings was for the Arizona and Sonora bar associations to hold continuing legal education exchanges, Welch said. The collaboration would follow the example of universities and transportation departments on both sides of the border, which already have joint projects.
"There's a lot of great examples you can see that are occurring on a state and local level right down to citizenry in terms of cooperation and championing those types of ideas," Welch said.
Welch said that further collaboration would be beneficial to both states' economies.
