Waymo Self-Driving Vehicle Involved In Accident In Chandler

Chandler police are investigating a car accident involving a Waymo self-driving car.

Detective Seth Tyler said a Honda sedan was traveling eastbound on Chandler Boulevard on Friday afternoon, when it had to swerve to avoid striking another car. As the Honda swerved, it continued eastbound into the westbound lanes of Chandler Boulevard and struck the Waymo vehicle.

The passenger in the Waymo vehicle sustained minor injuries and both cars were towed from the scene.

"The Waymo vehicle it was in autonomous mode," Tyler said. "It had a passenger sitting in the driver's seat. No violations at all on the part of the Waymo van. It was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
