Starting Wednesday students at the Peoria Unified School District will stay at school an hour longer.
On Monday the district governing board voted to extend the school day and released a revised calendar.
After the six-day teacher walkout ended last week, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas said she was concerned some schools would not be able to meet their minimum number of school days.
“Our districts will have to show that if they haven’t met the days, they’ve at least met the number of instructional hours,” Douglas said.
The district has yet to announce how this will affect preschool, after-school programs or summer school, but it will allow the 36,000 students at 34 elementary schools, seven high schools and one non-traditional high school to break for summer on May 24 as planned.
