The property near 32nd Street and Washington is currently home to Arctic Paws, a company that makes dog and cat treats. The owner is looking to move operations and offered to sell to Sky Harbor.

In 2012, the 3.2 acres at 3121 E. Washington was purchased for $1.81 million. Last January, a third-party appraiser determined it is worth $3.62 million.

Aviation officials told a city subcommittee it is critical to strategically acquire property south of Washington and north of the airport for future growth.

“I think it’s extremely important to protect Sky Harbor,” said Vice Mayor Thelda Williams, who was part of a master planning process in the 1990s that encouraged the Aviation Department to purchase properties.

The city council is scheduled to vote on the deal Wednesday.
