Arizonans Will Ignore Gas Prices And Drive Memorial Day Weekend

Motorists with plans to hit the road for Memorial Day weekend will be among hundreds of thousands of other Arizonans doing the same.

Although gas prices will climb to a four-year high at $3 a gallon, Michelle Donati with AAA Arizona predicted that won't stop an upward trend in travel this year.

"We're looking at nearly 847,000 Arizonans projected to travel over the upcoming three-day weekend, that's up almost 6 percent from last year," she said and chalked it up to growing consumer confidence and a strong economy both at home and around the country.

The tourism industry is luring travelers, offering deeper discounts than in years past.

"The average daily cost of a car rental this Memorial Day is the lowest in the past four years and 11 percent cheaper than last year," said Donati.

At hotels honoring AAA discounts, she said rates have dropped 14 percent lower than last year.

If you will be among the travelers driving, Donati warned the worst traffic will hit in the last afternoons on Thursday and Friday heading into the three-day weekend.
