The Border-to-Border seat belt initiative will go into effect Monday night. This is a kickoff to the "Click It or Ticket" program, which runs through June 3.
Navideh Forghani is with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office. She said while the program is in place, law enforcement will be writing citations day and night.
"So we are partnering with all the other law enforcement agencies in the nation along with the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety to make sure people are aware that they need to buckle up because it does save lives,” Forghani said.
In Arizona, the maximum penalty for a seat belt violation is $89. In 2016, nearly 1,000 people in Arizona were killed in motor vehicle crashes; 250 of them were not wearing a seat belt.
