Arizona high school students will gather Monday night for a candlelight vigil outside the Capitol.
They are part of the national March for Our Lives teen movement demanding gun reform.
The grassroots organization is re-energized after two high school shootings on Texas and Florida campuses, happened within 14 weeks. Combined, 32 children and five adults were killed and 27 others injured.
Attempts by Gov. Doug Ducey to pass a school safety bill here in Arizona failed before the Legislature closed.
Jacob Martinez with the local March for Our Lives chapter said they’ve asked to meet with him and Republican lawmakers since the first shooting.
“They [submitted] legislation sponsored by the NRA and Citizen’s Defense League and say that, ‘That’s gun safety legislation,’ and that ‘We should be proud of it,” he said. “Well, that’s not true and, it’s clearly disgraceful that the governor doesn’t want to listen to us, won’t even meet with us.”
Martinez warned students are recharged and will not let up until Gov. Ducey calls a special session to pass meaningful gun safety reform.
