In the Debate On How To Keep Kids Safe At School, Where Is The Middle Ground?

Kenneth Trump (no relation to the president) heads a company called National School Safety and Security Services. He has over 30 years experience in emergency and school safety planning. His focus: school crimes and violence.

When it comes to current arguments on what we need to make schools safer, he feels the calls for arming teachers, or having fewer doors, or installing metal detectors miss the fundamental problem: people.

He said schools need to refocus on people skills and frameworks for honest risk assessment.

So with all this expertise, coupled with the nation’s epidemic of school shootings, how does he approach his work now?

Lauren Gilger, host of KJZZ's The Show, is an award-winning journalist whose work has impacted communities large and small, exposing injustices and giving a voice to the voiceless and marginalized.
