ADOT To Create New 'Flex' Lanes Alongside I-17 Between Black Canyon City And Sunset Point

The Arizona Department of Transportation is planning to create new flex lanes that will run parallel to southbound Interstate 17. The new lanes will run between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point.

"For example they could be used for northbound traffic on a Friday afternoon, then used for southbound traffic on a Sunday or Monday afternoon," said Doug Nintzel of ADOT. "Safety gates or removable barriers would be used to allow for a traffic switch so that only one direction of traffic would use these gates at one time."

Nintzel said ADOT has collected more than $150 million to fund the project. Construction is set to begin in 2021.
