Time is running out to find a buyer for the Navajo Generating Station, the coal plant on tribal land in Northern Arizona that’s slated to close next year. Salt River Project and the other utilities that own the plant say it’s no longer economically viable, as natural gas prices have dropped and coal has become more and more obsolete.
But the plant employs about 750 people who are mostly members of the Navajo and Hopi tribes, so tribal leaders have been working to keep the plant and related mine operating.
This is also part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to buoy coal power in the U.S. Now, a Trump appointee is weighing in with an effort to halt the plant’s closure.
