State highway officials said a brush fire has closed two highways in northeastern Arizona and has forced some evacuations.
State Route 277 was closed in both directions Monday and Tuesday from Heber-Overgaard to Snowflake, while State Route 377 was shut down between Holbrook and Heber-Overgaard.
Navajo County Sheriff's officials said the 377 Fire was caused by someone dragging a tailgate from a trailer. Arizona Department of Transportation's Peter Corbett said drivers can avoid sparking wildfires.
"If you're towing something, make sure you don't have a tow chain dragging along the highway," Corbett said. "It can spark grass. Also, make sure your tires are inflated correctly. If they're too low, you can ride on the rims and create some sparks there. Don't drive onto dry grass. Your muffler and hot engine parts can start fires."
Authorities have evacuated ranches north of Route 377 and a shelter is available to people and livestock at the Navajo County Fairgrounds in Holbrook.
