A federal judge in Arizona has sentenced an Iranian national to time served for asylum fraud.
Ali Vahdani Pour lied on his asylum application, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona.
Pour was indicted in late 2017 on one count of false swearing in an immigration matter, and one count of a false statement made to a federal agency.
He pleaded guilty to the false swearing charge in April, and he admitted that he served in the Iranian military. He also admitted he’d been granted refugee status in Italy, before seeking asylum in the U.S.
The 28-year-old spent more than four months in prison.
Court records show Pour will serve a year of supervised probation.
