Why Land Around Sports Stadiums Is Becoming More Important To Teams

Thanks to a deal reached last month with Maricopa County, the Diamondbacks are officially allowed to look for a new home.

There are undoubtedly lots of factors the team would consider when deciding about a potential new place to play, but if some other cities are a guide, the stadium itself may not necessarily be the only big consideration. There seems to be a growing trend of teams either owning or having a stake in the development around their stadium, as an additional revenue stream.

With The Show to talk about this is Ted Ferris, a former president and CEO of the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority who now runs Ted Ferris Consulting, which deals with public finance and stadiums, among other things.

Mark Brodie is a co-host of The Show, KJZZ’s locally produced news magazine. Since starting at KJZZ in 2002, Brodie has been a host, reporter and producer, including several years covering the Arizona Legislature, based at the Capitol.
