It’s official — the 2018 monsoon season is here. Over the weekend, the Ahwatukee Foothills, Cave Creek and Wickenberg received some rain.
However, the Phoenix metro area hasn’t seen measurable rainfall in over 100 days. According to National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Deemer, this has happened before.
“A few years ago we had a stretch with over 140 days," he said. "So while it’s not unprecedented, it’s still definitely a lot longer than anyone wants to see.”
The official rain gauge at Sky Harbor Airport only recorded a trace of rain but Deemer remains a “glass half full” guy.
“No one’s ever happy with the amount of rain they get, but at least a lot of folks did see a little bit, which is definitely better than nothing,” he said.
Deemer said that's it's usually around July 4 when there's an uptick in moisture. So if his forecast is correct, Mother Nature might provide the fireworks by the Fourth of July.
