World Refugee Day is observed every year on June 20 to honor those who have fled war, persecution and human rights abuses.

The Helping Hand for Relief and Development office in Chandler was full of volunteers on Saturday.

Charles Shipman oversees the Arizona Refugee Resettlement Program. He visited the office where people were packing large containers with resources needed to support refugees living in camps around the world.

"None of us is immune from the possibility of experiencing what refugees have gone through and we would all hope --I believe-- that somebody would be there to help us if we found ourselves in those circumstances, so that’s really what it’s about for me.”

According to the Arizona Department of Economic Security, Syrian migration to Europe has contributed to the largest movement of people since World War Two.
