Teens and cars have had a close connection for decades. How many of us couldn’t wait to get a driver’s license and unleash our internal speed demon on America’s roads?
Even in the 1950s, they knew how important it was to cut loose and cruise down the streets, but today’s teens don’t seem quite as fascinated by owning and driving a car. The Federal Highway Administration’s numbers show a 46 percent decline in the number of 16-year-old Americans with a driver’s license.
Gary Cross, emeritus professor of history at Penn State University, has written about the phenomenon in his book "Machines of Youth: America’s Car Obsession" and was on The Show to talk about it.
