Tariffs Could Affect $266 Million In Arizona Goods

The United States Chamber of Commerce released statistics on how new tariffs, imposed by Canada, China, Mexico and the European Union as retaliation to the Trump administration’s tariffs, could affect each state.

For Arizona, the chamber says that more than $266 million in the state’s exports would be threatened by the new tariffs. About 57 percent of those tariffs come from Mexico, the state's largest trade partner.

Glenn Hamer is the president and CEO of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He compared the nation's trade policy to an accelerating, wrong-way train.

"We need to stop it and get it back going in the right direction," Hamer said, "or we're going to have an economic collision that's going to be felt around the world."

Over 770,000 jobs are supported by trade in Arizona, and Hamer argues that other state industries, including tourism, could also be affected by tariffs.
