Route 66 Could Be In Danger Without Federal Funding

The Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program is set to expire on October 1, 2019, unless Congress extends it.

The nostalgia and history surrounding Route 66 still brings a steady stream of tourists to the towns it passes through. Mayor John Moore of Williams, Arizona, says Route 66 is an integral part of the city.

“Route 66 is a major part of our economy," he said. "If it continues as it is, I think it is great. If they want to change the program or take any control or part of the operation of Route 66, then I would be opposed to it.”

Failure to renew the program could mean the loss of federal preservation dollars. Almost 30 cities and towns are located on Route 66 in Arizona.
