The Phoenix Art Museum has a new exhibition opening Friday, but it’s not bringing in a new collection or artist. Instead, the museum is showcasing nearly 50 artworks from the museum’s collection that are created exclusively by women.
In the Company of Women is the museum’s response to the #MeToo movement and "in light of growing awareness of gender inequality in many contexts, including art museums," it said. It’s part of a larger movement in the art world to address these issues, according to Susan Fisher Sterling.
She is the director of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and The Show spoke with her more about efforts like these and the historical problem they are attempting to address.
