The Arizona National Guard’s only infantry battalion is being deployed overseas for the first time in 10 years.

Gov. Doug Ducey spoke at a deployment ceremony Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe. He told the men and women in uniform that while Arizonans enjoy the comforts of home, their sacrifice would not be forgotten.

“It is because of the sacrifices made by you and your fellow soldiers that Americans can live a life of security, safety and peace that much of the world does not,” Ducey said.

About 400 soldiers will be deployed overseas for “Operation Spartan Shield.” Juan Rodriguez is one of the guardsmen. He said he’s ready for what’s next.

“Deploying, training and getting ready and going over," he said, "just getting ready to do our mission whatever that might be for the next year and coming back safely.”

Rodriguez said his family will miss him, but they're very supportive.
