Over 90 percent of Allegiant Air pilots in the Teamsters Local 1224 union voted to allow a strike if they cannot negotiate with their employer over a new scheduling system.
The pilots say it ignores seniority and time off for certain "must-fly" days, instead of its current system, which many major airlines follow.
"We remain committed to, and are actively working towards the completion of implementing the scheduling system," Hilarie Grey, said an Allegiant Air spokeswoman. "Under the Railway Labor Act, as well as the terms of the current collective bargaining agreement, this issue would not constitute grounds for a legal work stoppage."
Ryan Smith, the communications director at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway airport, says the threat has yet to disrupt the airport's operations. Allegiant offers 30 year-round and eight seasonal destinations out of Gateway airport.
Allegiant is a budget airline and flies into smaller airports across the country. The suburban Las Vegas-based company is the ninth largest commercial airline in the United States.
