Deadline To Reunite Migrant Children Under 5 Arrives

Tuesday is the court-ordered deadline for the federal government to reunite children under 5 with their migrant families, and the judge in the case wants 63 kids back with their parents.

At a hearing, the judge said reunifications should happen on time for all eligible children under 5, except those whose parents have already been deported.

Lawyers for the government had said in court documents that they would make the deadline for about half of the eligible kids. They also said the government is in compliance with the court order.

The American Civil Liberties Union did not agree. In the same court documents, the ACLU said the government has not obeyed the deadline.

During Tuesday’s hearing, the judge set another court date for Friday, and asked the ACLU to file paperwork on Thursday showing any government failure to meet the reunification deadline.
