State Secretary Mike Pompeo traveled to Mexico on Friday to meet with the country's president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, and both sides appear eager to find key areas of cooperation.
Pompeo visited Mexico with two other members of President Trump's cabinet and a handful of other top advisors. Pompeo says he looks forward to working with Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who was elected just two weeks ago.
"To that end, it was a priority for me and our team to come to Mexico, to being building the relationship with him and his team,” Pompeo said in remarks to reporters.
Lopez Obrador is already making a proposal to the U.S., his foreign relations advisor Marcelo Ebrard said. It covers what he considers the four pillars of the relationship — security, commerce, migration and development — but further details won’t be disclosed until Trump receives it.
