If you’ve been to downtown Phoenix recently, you’ve seen the boom of multi-family housing, skyscrapers, restaurants and bars opening all the time in the area.

Annually, Downtown Phoenix, Inc. commissions an economic study of how the district is performing by analyzing the sales tax revenues for restaurants, bars and hotels. For the 2018 study, they opened it up to a much larger look at downtown, using sales tax data as well as numbers like employee income taxes from surrounding businesses and residential property taxes.

Plus, this year’s study is the first to look beyond the downtown business core into surrounding neighborhoods. They took a look at the area from McDowell to Lincoln, and Seventh Avenue to Seventh Street.

The Show was joined by Dan Klocke, executive director of the Downtown Phoenix Partnership, to explain the results.

Lauren Gilger, host of KJZZ's The Show, is an award-winning journalist whose work has impacted communities large and small, exposing injustices and giving a voice to the voiceless and marginalized.
