Monsoon Stories 2018: Ty Karlovetz, Grand Canyon Park Ranger

Monsoon season in Arizona is both violent and beautiful. Powerful winds and rains can cause flash floods, but the storms can also bring relief from the oppressive desert heat and much-needed water to our perpetually dry state.

And now, as part of our ongoing series exploring the memories, emotions and perspectives the monsoon invokes in Arizonans, we hear from Ty Karlovetz, a park ranger at Grand Canyon National Park.

KJZZ’s Paige Phelps began by asking what it's like when the monsoon comes to the Grand Canyon.

Paige Phelps began her journalism career in Dallas, working for print publications owned by the D Magazine brands before moving on to the Dallas Morning News. Later, while living in Marfa, Texas, she learned the nuts and bolts of radio through KRTS Marfa Public Radio, one of the smallest public radio stations in the country, before landing at Houston Public Media's "Houston Matters" daily talk show as a producer.
