Arizona Department Of Transportation Testing Wrong-Way Detection System

The Arizona Department of Transportation said the freeway entrance-ramp meters are also part of a pilot wrong-way detection system that’s being tested.

When a wrong way vehicle is detected, the system will turn on the red lights at nearby entrance ramp meters to keep traffic from entering the freeway.

Since the pilot was launched in January, the system has detected 30 wrong way vehicles entering the I-17 off ramps and frontage roads.
