An 84-year-old woman filed a civil lawsuit Thursday in federal court against the Mesa Police Department and two officers, saying they unlawfully arrested and seriously injured her earlier this year.
A suit filed at the U.S. District Court in Phoenix says the officers violated Virginia Archer’s civil rights while at her home, doing a welfare check on her grandson.
The suit says Archer was subjected to “excessive, brutal and completely unnecessary force” by two officers.
A police spokesman said he couldn’t comment on the incident because of pending litigation.
In 2016, a Mesa police officer was fired after shooting and killing an unarmed man. He was charged with second-degree murder but later acquitted.
Earlier this year, three Mesa officers and a sergeant were placed on leave after violently beating an unarmed man.
