A wall of dust enveloped the metro area Thursday evening. Planes at Sky Harbor were delayed and south Phoenix was under an extreme thunderstorm warning.
Some trees were downed, but the damage wasn’t too bad, especially compared to Monday’s storms that left thousands without power and tore the roof off a Glendale apartment building.
Thursday night was more severe for residents in Yavapai County. Heavy rains led to mandatory evacuations in Mayer and about 80 families spent part of the night in a Red Cross shelter.
The Arizona monsoon normally lasts from mid-June until September.
