Conflicting Rulings On Invest In Ed Initiative Set Stage For Arizona Supreme Court To Decide

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge Thursday ruled the Invest in Education initiative can be on November’s ballot.

Judge James Smith rejected arguments from the Arizona Chamber of Commerce that since the measure discussed raising the tax rate by “percentage” rather than “percentage points,” voters should be blocked from weighing in.

The judge also ruled the law requiring strict compliance for voter initiatives is unconstitutional. But, a few hours later, the judge in another case — this one dealing with the ballot measure on a new renewable energy mandate — ruled strict compliance is constitutional.

Howard Fischer of Capitol Media Services joined The Show to sort this all out.

The Show also spoke with Joshua Buckley — he’s a teacher at Red Mountain High School in Mesa and chair of the Invest in Education campaign.
