Newspaper Editorials Respond To Trump's 'Fake News' Stance

Arizona Daily Start editorial

The Arizona Daily Star ran the editorial on Aug. 16, 2018.

President Donald Trump has been very bold in his criticism of many news media outlets — with much of it laser-focused on CNN. The phrase “fake news” became one of Trump’s favorites on the campaign trail and it still makes frequent appearances in his Twitter feed.

On Thursday, in response, more than 350 newspapers decided to print op-eds on the importance of freedom of the press in the United States— pushing back at Trump’s assertion that the press is the “enemy of the people.”

Sarah Garrecht Gassen, editorial page editor of the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson, talked about the decision.
