The U.S. Department of State issued an increased-caution travel advisory for Mexico this week, as authorities in the popular beach destination of Cancun uncovered eight cadavers across the city.
The advisory tells Americans to not travel to five states — Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas — that have long seen drug trafficking-related violence. But it also tells travelers to exercise increased caution in the popular tourist destination of Cancun and the surrounding state of Quintana Roo, which saw an increase in homicides last year, most of them apparently turf battles between criminal groups.
Authorities this week found eight bodies, including two abandoned in a taxi, two dismembered and left in plastic bags and one of a man who had apparently been shot while lying in a hammock, the Associated Press reported.
None of the killings were reported in Cancun's beach-side hotel area.
