Nearly 22,000 new Arizona voters have registered since March.
Secretary of State Michele Reagan says there are now more than 3.6 million voters in Arizona, and 1,264,295 are registered Republicans.
“Even though Republicans still have a slight advantage overall in this state, the Democrat registration increased far more than the Republican registration,” Reagan said of the new voters.
Around 21,000 voters registered as Democrats since March. Around 5,300 registered as Republicans, while the number of unaffiliated voters dropped by 4,500.
“We attribute that to a lot of independents switching into, it looks like the Democrat party, perhaps to be able to vote in their primary,” she said.
Overall, Arizona is home to around 1.26 million Republican voters and 1.11 million Democratic voters. There are around 31,000 Libertarian voters and 6,500 Green party registrants, with 1.21 million voters who don't have an official party preference.
The deadline to register to vote in the primary was July 30, and Primary Election Day is Aug. 28.
“We’re expecting over a million votes to be cast in this election,” she said. “That will be about near or perhaps above the record-setting turnout of 2010.”
To vote in the November election, new Arizona voters must register by midnight on Oct. 9.
