Holiday Traffic Expected This Labor Day Weekend

There will be no construction-related closures on Arizona highways this holiday weekend, but ADOT still expects heavy traffic and delays as travelers head up North or to California.

Spokesman Doug Nintzel said ADOT will be lowering the speed limit on sections of Interstate 17 in hopes of reducing accidents.

"You’re going to be sharing the highway with a lot of other drivers so our big recommendation is going to be get an early start coming back," he said.

Speed limits will be lowered by 10 mph along Interstate 17 between New River Road and the Sunset Point Rest Area north of Phoenix northbound I-17 on Friday, Aug. 31, and along southbound I-17 on Monday, Sept. 3.

Last year, nine people were killed on Arizona roads over Labor Day weekend.
