More than a week after the Arizona primary election, one of the closest races has finally been decided — and Diane Douglas is not going to have another shot at superintendent.

Frank Riggs is the official winner of the Republican primary for Arizona’s state superintendent of public instruction.

Riggs, a former California congressman and Arizona gubernatorial hopeful, eked ahead of opponent Bob Branch by 359 votes. Any margin under 200 votes would have triggered an automatic recount.

Incumbent Douglas finished third, several thousand votes behind.

Riggs is involved with charter school groups. He now faces Democrat and former teacher Kathy Hoffman in the November election.
