Regulators have rejected plans for $2 billion power lines that would run through Arizona and New Mexico. The proposed lines would funnel wind and solar energy from rural spots to more populated areas.
The Public Regulation Commission voted unanimously to reject the location of the lines. It found the proposal by the company SunZia lacked information needed to determine how the project would impact the environment. A hearing examiner had earlier determined that developers did not adequately research the zoning and land-use requirements of the property surrounding the route.
This project has been in the works for years. Past controversies have included concerns over its proximity to a military installation and worries about its impact on wildlife and rangeland.
