The future of public safety facilities is being discussed in Phoenix. During a council work study session Tuesday, Police Chief Jeri Williams pushed for headquarters to be replaced.
She said the 44-year-old building at 7th Avenue and Washington Street doesn’t meet the needs of employees — or the public.
“You walk into a lobby that has eight bolted chairs, that has no ambiance whatsoever and speak through a teller window at the officers. If I want a report I’m going to tell you to go to 17th Street and Grant. Is that customer service? I don’t think so," said Williams.
Fire Chief Kara Kalkbrenner wants to see at least one station replaced and two new ones built.
Both departments recommend extensive vehicle replacements.
The price tag could top $600 million — and that doesn’t include new employees and equipment. The Phoenix City Council is expected to discuss financing options later this year.
