Researcher Trying To Reduce Misdiagnosed Speech Disorders Among Bilingual Students

A researcher at the University of Arizona is trying to reduce the number of bilingual students who are misdiagnosed with speech disorders.

Leah Fabiano-Smith recently got a multi-million dollar federal grant to work on this. She’s an associate professor in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences at the University of Arizona.

She joined The Show to explain how big of an issue it is that bilingual students either don't get diagnosed, or they get diagnosed with an issue they don’t actually have.

Mark Brodie is a co-host of The Show, KJZZ’s locally produced news magazine. Since starting at KJZZ in 2002, Brodie has been a host, reporter and producer, including several years covering the Arizona Legislature, based at the Capitol.
