Are Tracked Math Classes Helping Or Hurting Students?

In high schools across the country, students are put onto a certain "track" for their math classes — it could be honors, advanced placement, college prep, remedial or any number of other-named tracks.

The idea is to let more advanced students go at a faster pace and cover more ground, while those who are struggling get more time to learn the basics. But research is starting to question whether that’s helping or hurting students.

Robert Berry, the president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and a professor at the University of Virginia School of Education, joined The Show to talk about his focus on math education.

Mark Brodie is a co-host of The Show, KJZZ’s locally produced news magazine. Since starting at KJZZ in 2002, Brodie has been a host, reporter and producer, including several years covering the Arizona Legislature, based at the Capitol.
