Mexico’s incoming president visited the neighboring state of Sonora this week, stopping for a trip to two border cities to lay out an ambitious agenda.
Caterino Lopez used to vote for a political party that incoming president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador roundly defeated this year.
"He's going to complete what he's promised," he says of the incoming president.
Lopez now backs Lopez Obrador, or AMLO as he’s known, because he says AMLO is committed to completing his promises.
AMLO stood on stage in Nogales, Mexico’s Miguel Hidalgo Plaza Friday night, laying out his plans to a cheering crowd of a few thousand people. AMLO vowed to double minimum wage in the border zone, a loosely defined region of the border he lays out as a 30 kilometer or roughly 18 mile band of Mexico, starting at the border.
He also promised that utilities, notoriously higher in Mexico's border cities, would match prices across the border. And he said he's taking a 60 percent pay cut from current Pres. Enrique Peña Nieto's salary.
Then he said no elected official could make more than the president.
